Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to schedule headshots with one of Nashville’s best photographers, Joe Hendricks.
He’s so talented, skilled, and enthusiastic that whether you like to be on camera or not, the entire experience is comfortable, fun, and casual.
This was the case when we met up for my headshots, you’ll see the keepers below. Which one will end up on the book? I guess you’ll have to pick up a copy on Amazon to find out! 😉
Laura the illustrator has been coming up with fantastic cover ideas, and a few days ago we chose the one we like best. Just like the rest of the images in the book, the cover art is really cute! As the publishing date approaches, I’ll start posting pictures, but for now, here’s a teaser…
This is just a glimpse at the rough drawing. The final will be cleaner and in color, of course! I’m so anxious to hold this book in my hands and realize the random idea I had years ago is now an actual physical product. It’s probably the closest I’ll get to how a mom feels after she has a baby. However, I will not be burping my book over my shoulder, that’s just weird!
Hope you have a great week!
Have you every wondered why elephants have such a long nose?
It moves and wiggles like a garden hose.
They could use it to swing a baseball bat.
Or to hold their rolled up yoga mat.
What if they want to give you a high five?
They could reach out their nose to give it a try!
Down and around and loops in the dark!
What would you do if your nose was like theirs?
Maybe it could help you with everything everywheres!
Like carrying your school books or brushing your teeth.
hands noses with someone you meet.
Next time you see one ask, “Why?” because they won’t be wrong.
When they tell you why their nose is so long!
You may be wondering what my book is about. Well, I’m keeping it under wraps for the most part, but I’ll say this: behind all the amazing things we see in the world, there’s an artist. From something as tiny as a lady bug to as large as the Atlantic Ocean, there’s a creator that made it all. This book touches on God’s creativity in nature; things we experience that can only have come from an amazingly creative artist. That’s part of who God is, and I think this book will present it in a way that is fun for young readers and parents, too. Or if you’re an uncle looking to be “the cool uncle,” this book will help you achieve that goal! At least I hope it does, because I’m also trying to be the cool uncle. Every. Day. Of. My. Life.
Every day that goes by could be a page in the book being written about my publishing experience. If that were true, I’m guessing we’re at the mid-way point of the story. Things are starting to come together and the main character (my book) will soon be what it was meant to be… a published book!
I’m anxious to share some of the illustrations with you, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. So be patient! I’m trying to do the same.
Today I’ve been working with Laura the illustrator on nailing down a cover. She’s sent me a few great ideas but none seem to quite feel right. So today she’s going back to the drawing board to come up with a few more ideas. I believe we’ll both know when it’s right, and it’ll be great. She’s also working on the color illustrations for the interior of the book; images we’ve agreed are good to go.
The more I’ve had time to think about it, it’s more of a sea horse, is it not? Anyway, hope you’re having a good week!
The team assembled to make my book a reality took time to put together. But I’m so happy with who signed on to be part of the journey. With the help of these three people, the book is going to be amazing. I’m so proud, and so happy that they’ve worked so hard to make my book great!
Carin Siegfried – editor
I found Carin through Reedsy.com and she’s been great in making my book a lot more professional with a good flow, and is helping handle a lot of the legal and technical stuff. She’s full of great advice, and she’s awesome!
Laura Watson – illustrator
I found Laura through Childrensillustrators.com and couldn’t be more happy with having her on board. She creates amazing pictures, and I can’t wait for you all to see her work in my book! While you wait for the book, check out her original art on Etsy, here.
Diana Wade – designer
Diana Wade was referred to me and I’m so glad. She’s such a pleasure to work with and has done so much research on how to print/distribute my book. She’s been an invaluable asset and when you see my book and think, “Wow, this looks amazing!” you have Diana to thank for that.
They say time flies when you’re having fun, and the process of publishing this book definitely fits into that quote. To be honest, I may not have ever even pursued it if my career path didn’t change pretty drastically back in March 2015. I’d been sitting on the idea for this book for a couple years. But this past summer I decided to dive in. Now it’s mid-September and the ball is rolling. I’m so excited about the book, and can’t wait for people everywhere to see the finished product. We have a rough plan to release it early December. I say we because it’s taken a team of such talented people to bring my little idea to life. More on the team in the next post… stay tuned!
